Brief Stories of God at Work in India

God is at work in Northern India. He is at work through our NMM missionaries. God is working through Indian believers, He is speaking in dreams, and people are turning to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Pray for those yet to hear the name of Jesus, that they too can come to new life. Read about what God is doing in India.

Church planting success story

Here is an amazing story of how God is using a simple, down to earth native missionary to accomplish His purpose. Heeralal Bhai belongs to the “Mina” people group, which is one of the least evangelized groups in India. Along with his wife, Sardari and six children, he worshipped several Hindu gods and goddesses. Little did he know what God had planned for him.

In 1996, due to a tumor in his spine, he became completely paralyzed. Knowing that four of his relatives with similar illness had died few years ago, he was overwhelmed with fear. He became totally bedridden. Then his family members carried him on his cot and took him to the village sorcerer. All the rituals they did for him to receive healing were in vain. He was then taken to various hospitals for medical treatment, but nothing could bring any change in his condition.

Then one day Heeralal’s sister told him about a native missionary from a neighboring village who had prayed for her son and he was healed. Heeralal was desperate to meet this native missionary. So his sister arranged a meeting at her house. Again four of Heeralal’s relatives carried him and brought him to his sister’s house. The missionary shared the gospel with them and prayed for him. To the disappointment of Heeralal’s relatives, there was no change in his physical condition. But by the end of the prayer, he gave his heart to Jesus. He was filled with indescribable peace. He decided to remove all the idols out of his house. He became eager to attend church and know more from God’s Word. So he asked his people to help him every week to reach the church. For several weeks his relatives carried him back and forth to the church. One day he expressed his desire to take water baptism as a public testimony of his faith in Jesus. With the help of four people, he was lowered into the water and was baptized.

Soon the relatives of Heeralal deserted him as they were tired of carrying him around. But his wife continued to take care of him untiringly. She also had other responsibilities like running their store, farming and taking care of the six children. She alone helped him with his personal care, doing his feeding and lifting. In spite of all this hardship, her love for her husband had not faded.

Then he was brought to Udaipur where the NMM family prayed for him. Pastor. Thomas Mathews also consulted surgeons concerning Heeralal’s condition. They advised it would be risky to do surgery for the removal of the tumor. But the church continued to pray for Heeralal. He recovered following the surgery, and we continued to pray for him. Before long, Heeralal was able to move and walk. The surgeons themselves were amazed at what had happened.

Right after the healing, Heeralal dedicated his life for the ministry. He started sharing the gospel. Now he has a striving church with over 250 believers.

Right now there are hundreds of native missionaries like Heeralal who are equally dedicated and equally persecuted for their bold witness for Christ. Yet no one is there to wipe their tears, comfort and pray with them, and hand them that cup of water to ease their pain. It takes so little to provide for their basic needs, since they live on the same level of the people they serve. Yet the return on precious souls won for Christ will be priceless.

The cost of covering the basic needs of one of these native missionaries ranges from $30 to $100 a month, depending on the location he is working in, as well as the size of his family. This small amount will enable the missionary to devote his entire time to preaching the Gospel.

Just think, a family can spend $30 or more for just one evening out at a restaurant or at the movies. That same $30 can help support a native missionary who, in one month, can share the Gospel with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people. A meal out lasts only until we are hungry again-but helping people come to know Jesus as their Savior will satisfy their spiritual hunger for eternity. What a wonderful reward for you to have a direct part in winning thousands of souls to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Native missionaries like Heeralal are willing to go and, if called upon, even to lay down their lives. All they need is someone to send them. Sending a Gospel messenger out to an un-reached village so the people there can hear about salvation through Jesus Christ could be God’s greatest opportunity for you to serve Him.

Will you prayerfully take on the sponsorship of one or more of these 1,000 missionaries? Just fill out the enclosed card and we will send you the picture and testimony of the native missionary you are helping support.

As the Lord will bless you for your decision to help one of His servants in His name, you will be blessed by the Lord. As brother like Heeralal are willing to sacrifice their lives and our Lord Jesus sacrificed His, would it not be a privilege for you to do all you can to help these native missionaries go to the darkest corners of India with the light of Christ?

Rampage Against Christianity—Until He Met The Living

Late one night, a group of young men in Haryana, Northern India, broke into a Christian church and vandalized the property.Working quickly, they hauled the brand new furniture outside, dragged the pieces to the local well and sent them crashing to the bottom. Vasant was pleased.

As leader of a group of young religious fundamentalists, Vasant kept a low profile for the next few months. Then he and some friends went back to survey the condition of the church, but there was little sign of the damage they had wreaked. Believers had lovingly made repairs, replaced the furniture, and—from all appearances—were still meeting there to sing and pray to Jesus. Venting their anger, Vasant and his friends tracked down those responsible for the repairs and beat them unmercifully.
“I wanted to wipe out Christianity from our state,” he remembers, adding that he'd helped demolish many other churches. Tough as nails, he was a credit to the anti-Christian cause.

Out to Destroy

Born in a small village in Haryana, Vasant grew up in a devout family that venerated the Hindu deity Hanuman, the monkey god. On Thursdays, it was their custom to rise at 5:00 a.m. to bring sacrifices to the idol—coconut, flowers, or incense—and spend the day fasting. This had been the family tradition for generations.

When Vasant was 24, his world was shaken when his landlord father died, leaving behind two wives and their children. A serious dispute over inheritance rights broke out in the family, and Vasant became so bitter toward his stepbrothers that he plotted to kill them. But even as he saved money to buy a gun, his father's death raised questions that troubled him more than the inheritance dispute: Where is my father now? When it's my turn to die, what will happen to my soul

“I had no peace of mind,” he recalls. “I was totally corrupt in my heart.”

In his quest to discover purpose and meaning in life, Vasant joined an anti-Christian organization of religious fundamentalists. With his go-getter personality, he was soon leader of a local group. “We were told that Christianity is a foreign religion and that we need to stop it,” he explains. With 20 to 25 young men under him, Vasant set out to harass area missionaries who showed the Jesus film. He estimates that they destroyed 6 film projectors and burned perhaps as many copies of the Jesus film. But when they vandalized the church, Vasant life was on the brink of change. For the pastor and his congregation, that act of vandalism was a call to prayer—and for the next year they prayed for divine intervention in ‘Vasant life.

During that time, the pastor had opportunity to talk one-on-one with Vasant and gave him a New Testament. Reluctantly he began reading it and was moved by the words of Jesus in Matthew 28:18, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” Vasant went to a worship service, curious to learn more. When his group found out that its leader had visited a Christian church, they threatened to beat him.

As Vasant secretly immersed himself in the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit ignited the truth to his heart and revealed the deep love of God. “The message of the supreme sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ came alive,” he says. “I realized my hopeless condition, repented of sin, and received Jesus as my Savior and King. I was completely changed. The love of Jesus conquered me.”

All for the Living One

When Vasant became a Christian, the news spread like wildfire and nearly everyone he knew—relatives, friends, and neighbors—rejected him. “I stood firm for my Redeemer and began to witness of the Living One to the lost.” And while God removed his hatred for his stepbrothers, they still despised him for being a Christian. Like many new believers in the 10/40 Window, he was driven away from his home village.

Through God's provision, Vasant attended a Bible college for one year. During this time he surrendered to God's call to ministry. He then poured himself into Gospel work for four years, planting four churches and helping more than 200 people come to the Lord.

Today the 29-year-old missionary studies at a NMM Bible school in India, where he receives additional training for even greater effectiveness in ministry. His dream is to plant more Churches in Hrayana after graduation. He hopes that God will use him to reach troubled youth—even those who live to harass believers. As Vasant knows from his own past, they're only enemies of God until Jesus conquers their hearts.

The light of the Gospel in Bihar

Jayanthi has a lot of friends in her village. Jayanthi came to know Jesus while she was working in Punjab. “One of my friends invited me for a house fellowship. I was curious to find out what was happening there.’ But jayanthi’s life was transformed that evening hearing the Gospel first time.

She went back to her village and began to share the good news of Jesus to every one she knows. They don’t have church in their own village. Every Sunday morning Jayanthi and her friends walk 20 miles to come to worship. About 30% of the Christians who gather in tarvana village are Muslims and rest of them are from former Hindu background. Every Sunday new members are added to the church. Those who come from far places bring their lunch with them and share their food with others.

God is bringing a great harvest in Bihar. Turn back the clock a mere decade. Missionary Babu began working in about twelve villages near Tarvana, a town in the siwan district.

For the first three years, Missionary Babu and his family and less than ten believers to worship. It took another three years to grow up to 40. This situation continued for another seven years. Because of lack of fruitfulness, he thought of handing over the responsibility to one of the brothers and thought moving to another city. But from November 2004 the church began to grow. Great revival started. When asked why there was a change in your decision to stay back. Babu said ‘’I came to NMM annual convenconvention. I was struggling hard with question whether I should stay in the same village and continue the work, because I felt I cannot see any spectacular result. But during the convention time. Holy Spirit told me don’t give up.

I returned to my home after the convention with an expectation of something new that is going to happen. You believe it or not, things began to change, said Missionary Babu. On Sunday morning people began to turn up at our door step. People started to come from the nearby villages. Sick people started get healing. So many miracles Now around 300 people are coming together for worship. Jesus said "I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it".

As the Lord will bless you for your decision to help one of His servants in His name, you will be blessed by the Lord.As brother like Babu are willing to sacrifice their lives and our Lord Jesus sacrificed His, would it not be a privilege for you to do all you can to help these native missionaries go to the darkest corners of India with the light of Christ?

Seeking God for Fruit

Patras knelt on the hard floor of his room. Tears streamed down his face. He wanted only one thing from God. And by faith, he knew he would have it.
Patras comes from a tribal group in India. With a passion to reach the lost, he went to a NMM Bible school. After graduation, he could hardly wait to reach his mission field. This was the first time a missionary ever came to this village. He eagerly distributed Gospel literature and visited houses. But no one was interested. Patras grew very discouraged. But instead of giving up, he spent long hours in prayer and fasting. “Oh, God,” he cried, “please help these people turn to you.” Over time, the Lord led him to reach out to local children in a special way. He started a school. The excited students took the Bible stories and Gospel songs home to their parents. This opened the door for many of the adults to be interested in Christ. It was not long before Patara’s prayers were answered: Fifteen people gave their lives to Christ, and a church was started in the village.

Surprise Visitors

When NMM missionary Jorwar arranged to do a Gospel outreach in an unreached village in Gujarat India, he did not count on there being unexpected guests. As Jorawar poured out his heart to the 40 people gathered, several men armed with sticks approached, intending to stop the meeting.

Missionary Jorwar calmly took the men aside, explaining that he did not come to disturb the village: He was just there to bring people the Good News of Jesus. By God's grace, the men left, and everything continued as though nothing had happened. “Praise God for His mighty act of deliverance and protection,” a NMM field leader expressed about the incident. How we thank the Lord that through His power and the gentle courage of a native missionary, 40 people were able to hear the Gospel that day. Let us praise our awesome God.
